Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition design

JBL Black Edition versions of the Kia Sportage retain the basic ingredients of the standard range. It has the same shell: a slick crossover body with a muscular front-end and low(ish) ground clearance to add to the sporty feel.

Kia has ‘jazzed up’ this new specification of the Sportage by throwing in a more aggressive design for the grille. Also adding to the Sportage’s dapper design is a glossy black exterior and new skid plates and roof rails.

Short overhangs are key to giving the Sportage one of the more engaging drives you can experience in a passenger car such as this. However, Kia hasn’t sacrificed practicality in order to make this car look good, as we’ll show you later on.

One thing you’ll notice about the JBL Black Edition Sportage is that it has a revised rear bumper. A rear diffuser sits between two sporty-looking exhaust pipes, both of which make the car look good and perform better as air intakes are managed better, while reducing drag.

Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition interior

The Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition is based on the current ‘3’ trim so comes as standard with a shed load of tech-savvy features and equipment. These include:

  • 360-degree around view monitor
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • LED bi-function headlights and LED rear tail lights
  • Smart entry system with engine start/stop button
  • Heated front and rear outer seats
  • Heated steering wheel

Although Kia hasn’t released interior pictures of its limited edition Sportage, materials and layout is identical to the 3 (pictured above).

If this top-end Sportage is anything to go off, this newest version will be well-built, feel classy inside and get good visibility out the front and back.

All Sportage models (including this new variation) come with an 8″ touchscreen infotainment system.

You can’t argue with its functionality or appearance. It’s quick to respond to touches and there’s shortcut buttons you can use to navigate to different menus that are easier to use while you’re on the move. Above all else, smartphone mirroring via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (depending on your device) is also standard. In this mode, you can project your smartphone’s display onto the central screen and use the built-in sat nav and use your favourite apps.

Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition engines

There are two engines to choose from in the new Sportage. The first is a 174bhp 1.6-litre T-GDi petrol unit that comes available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission) automatic gearbox.

Your other option is a 134bhp 1.6-litre CRDi mild-hybrid diesel powertrain. Just like its petrol counterpart, the hybrid unit can be specified with a manual or automatic gearbox. As you’d expect, this mildly electrified version has better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than the petrol engine, but the latter has more performance.

See below a breakdown of both models’ engines.

Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition driving and safety

The latest driving assistance systems are standard in the Sportage JBL Black Edition. Lane keeping assist, high beam assist, speed limit information function and a driver attention warning to help you avoid fatigue behind the wheel are all included.

For those of you wanting to tow a trailer, there’s even a trailer stability assist system that makes controlling any sway back there easier.

Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition 4

For a family crossover, the Sportage’s driving experience is a surprisingly engaging one. Mostly this is down to its lowered suspension and nicely weighted steering which can be likened to the Seat Ateca.

Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition 6

If you’re after a more comfortable ride, we recommend looking at the Nissan Qashqai or Skoda Karoq.

With that being said, this JBL Black Edition has the smallest 17″ alloy wheels as standard. These make the ride of the car a lot less choppier compared to when you opt for larger ones.

Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition practicality

All Kia Sportage models are up to scratch when it comes to practicality, with very little difference from its rivals.

For passengers, the only downside is that the panoramic sunroof eats into headspace. This will make the ceiling of the car feel a bit too low down for passengers over six foot.

Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition 11

The rear seats are a much better story, with plenty of leg, head and shoulder room for two tall adults. A small centre tunnel even frees up space for a middle passenger to put their feet, though it’s slightly more raised than the outer two seats so it’s best saved for a child.

If you’re not using the middle seat, we recommend dropping the arm rest for extra comfort in the back. You’ll find two cupholders in there too which is an added bonus.

Kia Sportage JBL Black Edition 8

Boot space will vary depending on which engine you choose for your Sportage. Mild hybrid models have less load space (439 litres versus 491 litres in petrol versions) due to the extra room needed for the 48V battery pack.

Cubby spaces and areas to store your knick-knacks are plentiful regardless of which powertrain you go for. Large door bins in the front and rear will fit a half-litre bottle of water, while a large glove box, trays to store your phone and a set of cupholders behind the gearbox come in handy.
