Geneva 2020 Motor Show: Cars We Missed

The Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), one of Europe’s biggest events for showcasing new cars, cancelled its 90th edition due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It joins a list of numerous high-profile occurrences which the Covid-19 virus has put a stop to. Despite this, organisers still persisted to reveal details about what vehicles would have been there, should it have gone ahead.

So, we take a look at some of the offerings major manufacturers were due to unveil from March 5 till March 15.

Audi A3 Sportback

The esteemed new Audi A3 is going to be available from mid-2020 and boy does it bring with it some firepower.

Now in its fourth generation, the revised A3 will feature hybrid, petrol and diesel drivetrains.


  • Sporty five-door exterior modelled using lighter, more rigid steel and aluminium. Based on the RS6.
  • A four-door saloon version more suited for families.
  • An increased wheelbase and width for greater interior space.
  • Front-wheel drive (rear-wheel for most powerful RS3), six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox options.
  • Petrol-hybrid engines (128bhp and 148bhp or 178bhp) with a 48V electric motor boost.
  • Euro6 diesel engines (power outputs between 134bhp and 201bhp).
  • All-electric A3 E-tron due to be released
  • Entry-level models priced around £25,000.

Bentley Bacalar

An exclusive roadster which is being developed by Bentley‘s Mulliner arm. The Bacalar has a strikingly luxurious design which is highlighted by a low-riding body which sits on a massive pair of 22″ alloys.


  • Top speed of over 200mph.
  • Bi-turbo W12 engine which develops 650bhp.
  • Two-seat interior and convertible roof.
  • Riverwood decoration inside with wool and tweed upholstery.
  • Only 12 have been produced, each one priced at £1.5 million.

BMW M30d xDrive

This new BMW 3 Series won’t just become the most powerful of its kind to use diesel-hybrid technology, but it will have a whole host of neat features which will get Bimmer fans excited.

Even though it’s not being branded in Geneva, you can expect the following.


  • Just under 335bhp for the engine, which is close to the range-topping M340i.
  • Full-time all-wheel drive system and M Sport power inspired by the same platform as the X5.
  • Both Saloon and Touring body types available.
  • Price and release date not yet known.

Fiat 500e

There aren’t many chic cars which are quite as renowned as the Fiat 500. First of all it’s Italian, so style is this vehicle’s forte. Secondly, it’s generally cheap to run and is fun to dart about in.

Now the car is dipping its toe into the all-electric realm, so what could possible go wrong?


  • A brand-new platform which will uphold its retro nature, while supporting technological advancements.
  • Clean, minimalist interior which is dominated by a large central infotainment touchscreen.
  • It will rival the Mini electric.
  • Price is expected to be around £26,000 (including government plug-in grant of £2,500)

New Hyundai i20 and i30

There will be an entirely new version of the Hyundai i20 supermini this year, while the slightly larger i30 will receive a mid-life facelift.


  • The new i20 will be more sporty in appearance, with a mesh grille, new LEDs, more aggressive body lines and splashes of chrome trim.
  • Increased interior space for the i20 and improved technology than predecessors.
  • The latest edition of the i30 family hatch will have similarly sportier design features on the outside, including new bumpers and LED headlights.
  • On top of this, the i30 receives a new digital instrument cluster, mild-hybrid tech and the choice of a large 10.25″ touchscreen display.
  • Expected price for the i20 is around £13,000 while the i30 is slightly more, at around £16,500.

Kia Sorento

Kia has teased us with images and some details about a new Sorento, which is already one of its flagship SUVs. This will be its third generation and we expect that it will still feature its massive 660-litre boot, powerful engine and all-wheel drive system.


  • A first-ever hybrid engine option.
  • Intelligent all-wheel drive, cruise control and the latest infotainment system with smartphone integration.
  • A brand-new monocoque platform which allows for seven seats with increased interior space.
  • Prices expected to start from £30,000, rising to around £43,000 for top-spec sporty GT-Line models.

Mercedes CLA and GLA PHEVs

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are becoming an increasingly popular option for German giant Mercedes, which it introduced to the existing A-Class and B-Class.

It now looks like bigger models in its extensive range are being ‘switched on’ with this fuel-saving and lower emission engine tech too. Both the slick CLA Coupe and sporty GLA family SUV are the vehicles in question.

Other than the addition of a charging port to plug in for electrically enhanced power, what else would you have seen from these two at the Geneva show?


  • Both models will use a 1.3-litre petrol engine, producing 114bhp and backed by a 101bhp electric motor for a punchy 215bhp total output.
  • Electric-only range is expected to be around 35 miles.
  • A route-based system for the satnav will be on both which uses speed limits and other data to make the most of the hybrid tech.
  • Driving style will also dictate when the vehicles use pure electric mode or kick in the combustion engine – e.g. when the accelerator is not pressed in EV mode it will switch back to supporting the motor with the combustion unit.
  • Price and release date not yet known.

Renault Morphoz

Renault’s concept electric model, the Morphoz, is quite the spectacle, with design cues seemingly being taken from a Transformer. Quite literally, the car is being labelled a family car and a grand tourer at the same time due to its proposed ability to ‘shapeshift’ from one to the other.

How this happens we’re not entirely sure of, but it would have been something to marvel at if it was business as usual in Geneva. However, here’s what we do know.


  • Recycled materials littered throughout the interior, including wood on the dashboard and centre console, plastic for the floor and seating fabric.
  • Nissan helped co-produce the vehicle, which is based on the CMF-EV platform which is said to optimise its electric performance.
  • The transformation happens by choosing between two modes – ‘City’ (the car is essentially an eco-friendly crossover with a 40kWh battery and single motor which provides a 249-mile range).
  • A manufacturer battery station would be required to switch to ‘Travel’ mode. Here, a more powerful 50kWh battery would be added, the wheelbase extended, plus the bonnet and boot for an extra 435 miles and greater interior space.
  • Price and release date not yet known.

Seat Leon

The 2020 Seat Leon will feature more styling options that make it slicker. Plus, there will be the first electric version of this esteemed hatchback.


  • A rear light bar which runs the width of the car, a brand-new ‘Leon’ insignia below the badge and performance 18″ alloys.
  • New meshe grille plus technology advancements across the range – including a ‘Seat digital cockpit’ and ‘Seat connect’ for the satnav.
  • An electric model, the details which have not been released yet.
  • Price is expected to start from around £20,000.

Skoda Octavia vRS

Considered the ‘hot option’ for Skoda‘s practical family hatchback, the Octavia. The more powerful vRS variation has been around since 2011 but will now be revisited by the Czech manufacturer. The result is expected to be a more sophisticated offering.


  • A plug-in hybrid model which delivers 250bhp will be added to the existing petrol and diesel engine options.
  • Expected gearbox options include a manual and dual-clutch automatic.
  • Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options are expected to be available across the range.
  • CO2 emissions of 30g/km are being targeted by Skoda for the plug-in hybrid version, plus an all-electric range of 37 miles when fully charged.
  • Similar sporty design features as its predecessor, such as twin exhaust tailpipes, a black grille, wide front bumper and rear spoiler.
  • Expected late 2020 and pricing is expected to be slightly more than the existing one (£30,000)

Toyota Yaris and Yaris SUV

The Japanese supermini Toyota Yaris is a European driver favourite, having broken the sales barrier for the brand. Now in its third-generation, the 2020 version has larger dimensions and more grown-up characteristics. However, if this isn’t enough, there will also be an SUV-based Yaris you can choose from. Here are some of the headlines for both models.


  • It’s 50mm wider and has a 50mm increase in the wheelbase. This results in greater passenger space and more track control out on the road.
  • Reduced length (only by 5mm) means that there’s greater manoeuvrability around town. Toyota say the car will be best in its class for turning circle.
  • Most controls other than for the climate are housed within an 8″ touchscreen which is in a visible spot on the dashboard in order to aid visibility while driving.
  • An entry-level 1.0-litre engine is available with a five-speed manual gearbox, while a 1.5-litre has a six-speed manual or same speed automatic.
  • All-wheel drive and hybrid powertrain available for the SUV version of the Yaris, which will share the same TNGA-B platform.
  • Off-road suspension also available for the Yaris SUV, which is yet to be named.
  • Standard Yaris expected Spring 2020 and will cost around £15,000. Release date and these details are unknown for the new SUV.
