1. Ford Puma
At first glance the Ford Puma could be mistaken for a hatchback. Its compact, sporty design gives it a similar appearance to the Fiesta on which it’s based. But where it lacks in typical SUV-style aesthetics, it does not lack in practicality.
The Puma is stacked with storage capabilities all throughout the interior so you will never find yourself balancing your drink and phone on the dashboard. Your phone in fact, has its own space where it can be wirelessly charged. So the days of having to drag your phone charger to and from the car are gone.
The Ford Puma’s performance leans more towards a hatchback than anything larger. It’s super nimble handling is instantly noticeable behind the wheel of any version of the small SUV. Allowing for an enjoyable drive whether you’re taking on the city’s roundabouts or zipping around country lanes.
Choice is not limited when it comes to engines. Almost all of which include hybrid technology to save fuel. The fastest unit, badged ‘Ecoboost mHEV 155’, hits 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds. Making it faster than a lot of small SUVs much higher up the price range.
If you’re looking for the fun of driving a hot hatch but need the practicality of a larger vehicle, the Ford Puma is the perfect place to start.

2. Nissan Qashqai
In a world full of SUVs, the Nissan Qashqai still leads the way 13 years after its first launch.
Having recently received an upgrade, set for release in the summer, the Qashqai has built upon its family friendly practicality by adding a slicker, sportier design.
Its second generation, available now, features brisk acceleration in all of its engine options, and really excels in delivering power smoothly. Most impressively though, is the Qashqai’s ability to build speed from low revs, regardless of what gear you are in.
The new Qashqai will feature everything that is popular about previous editions, while adding an innovative energy regenerating system. Activated while decelerating, the system stores energy and saves it for future acceleration.
Like all good SUVs, the Qashqai is judged largely on its storage capabilities – and it doesn’t disappoint. Passengers won’t be left wanting more space while being able to store their accessories in a number of different pockets or door bins. Boot space is what you would expect from a vehicle of its kind, and is equipped with the ‘luggage board system’ in all but the entry-level trim.

3. Volvo XC40
The Volvo XC40 is one of the great all-rounders, ‘jack of all trades’ in the SUV class. So much so that it was voted What Car? Car of the Year 2021 in the family SUV category.
An extensive range of engines is topped by the all-electric Recharge P8. The EV produces a whopping 402bhp that reaches 62mph from standstill in under five seconds. If you like your traditional fuelled engines however, there is no shortage of oomph. The quickest of which, the 2.0-litre B5, boasts a respectable 247bhp and hits 62mph in 6.4 seconds.
Great suspension and a lofty driving position all add to the thrill of driving the XC40. The interior quality does its bit too, providing finer materials than you are likely to find in any other SUV.
As you would expect, the inside of the XC40 is spacious enough to accommodate even the tallest of families, with room to spare. The boot stands at an impressive 452-litres but feels like much more thanks to its square proportions that make loading much easier.

4. Peugeot 2008
Another great all-round SUV that combines its high performance with practicality. The Peugeot 2008 looks the part too. Based on the 208 hatchback, its larger 2008 cousin carries over the fresh-looking front grille and headlights to give a sporty, premium look.
With a number of engine options available, it is no surprise that the Peugeot 2008 packs a punch. A top spec 155bhp producing engine is available on the GT line trim, and the all-electric version delivers around 135bhp.
Fuel economy is the 2008’s prize asset though, with even the lowest performing spec delivering 46.6mpg, and most ranging between 52.6-65.7mpg. The electric alternative lasts over 200 miles on a single charge officially.
The comfortable, relaxing drive you experience in the 2008 is enhanced by the premium-feel interior. Soft touch materials feel good and wouldn’t look out of place in the most luxurious of cars. Storage space isn’t hard to come by either, as you’d expect.

5. Audi Q3
Yes the Audi Q3 is remarkably available for less than £300pcm – and the slick-looking SUV really lives up to its manufacturer’s name.
Performance is bound to impress. The 35 TFSI engine available on the Sportback trim gives you a nice kick to the tune of 150bhp, and makes the sporty-looking SUV feel more like a hot hatchback.
An Audi car performing well is hardly any surprise though. What is more impressive is their ability to pack that performance into a larger, more practical car that still serves its purpose.
A wide and spacious interior gives passengers plenty of head and leg room, and the boot gives up to 675-litres of storage space thanks to incredibly versatile adjustable seats. It wouldn’t be an SUV if it didn’t offer enough passenger and storage space, but the German manufacturer’s make sure that isn’t something you need to worry about.
