2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible Design

The design is the first thing that draws you to any car right? Despite what its performance may be or what digital features it has in its locker – if it looks bad, it doesn’t get a second look. BMW has led with this thought and barely put a foot wrong in its ambitious design of the all-new 4 Series Convertible.

There is one obvious place to start – the grille. BMW’s infamous kidney grille has had a revamp recently and while it continues to split opinion, we love it. The mesh texture adds an extra sporty element to a car that already screams sporty.

Its not all about looks though, the grille actually houses the front camera and parking sensors. Both of which are seamlessly added into the design so much so that they are difficult to spot even close up.

Away from the grille, the elongated creased bonnet is excellently crafted and enhances the 4 Series’ sporty image even further. Sat at the front of that bonnet is the two new extremely slim LED headlights that come as standard and give a more aggressive feel to the latest BMW.

The colour is immediately eye-catching too. That is because it has been specially introduced alongside the 4 Series Convertible. Dubbed ‘Sanremo Green’ by the German manufacturer’s – the metallic green does a great job of reflecting light and making the convertible look good from any angle.

Perhaps the most defining feature of the 2nd generation convertible is the soft-top roof. From an aesthetics perspective the soft-top, which comes in black as standard, combines elegantly with the Sanremo Green body. As with the body colours though, there is the option to customise. You can swap the black for an ‘Anthracite Silver’ if you would prefer.

2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible Performance

New BMW TwinPower Turbo engines feature across the range, including a six-cylinder engine in the top spec, M440i xDrive. Speaking of which, thanks in part to the new TwinPower Turbo, the M440i produces over 370hp and reaches 60mph from standstill in just 4.5 seconds.

Mild hybrid technology is included across the range of diesel units, and the six-cylinder in-line petrol engine results in a sharper response and optimised efficiency. A 48V starter-generator assists the engine to the tune of an additional 8kW/11hp.

The performance of the new 4 Series Convertible is also owed in part to the new roof. Switching to soft-top makes the roof 40% lighter, and drastically lowers the cars centre of gravity. Wider wheel tracks enrich the cars agility even further, giving its drivers a real thrill on windier roads and bends.

2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible Practicality

Despite its blistering performance and eye-catching design, BMW has not neglected the 4 Series Convertible’s practicality.

The roof takes only 18 seconds to open and close, and can be done at speeds up to 31mph – so no need to stop when cruising around the city. When closed, the roof takes up less space in the boot than its predecessor, only 85 litres compared to the previous generation’s 150 litres.

Storage in general has increased, the boot is 385 litres in total compared to the 370 litres in the older models. The four-seater offers plenty of space for all passengers to sit comfortably without having to squeeze, although with only two doors, getting in the back takes a bit of nimble footwork.

2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible Technology

For the most part, the new 4 Series Convertible’s interior is in keeping with recent BMW models. Luxurious Vernasca leather features across the range of 2nd generation convertibles and fully electric seats accompany it to add an extra element of comfort.

New driver assistance systems replicate those in other new BMW models and have added a reverse camera to make parking and reversing effortless. Upgrading to the optional Technology Plus pack comes with a Driving Assistant Professional that includes Steering and Lane control Assistant, Active Cruise Control, and Automatic Speed Limit Assist among other handy features.

If you don’t want to upgrade though, you will still get smartphone integration as standard, compatible with both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto.

All new BMW 4 Series cars come with Remote Software Upgrade, a service that delivers updates to your car over the air, just like your mobile phone.
