How does the registration system work?

Have you always wondered what the numbers and letters on a registration plate mean? It is fairly simple process but one that you can use to impress your friends when the pubs finally reopen.

• Area Code: The first two letters are regional identifiers and are determined by the area in which your vehicle is registered in. The above example being registered in Birmingham (BA-BY).
• Age Identifier: This represents the year in which the car was first registered. As there are two new registration periods each year. March’s registrations feature the last two digits of the year, whereas September’s will be the same number plus 50. So the above example was registered in September 2001.
• Randomly Generated: These three letters are randomly generated and have no meaning.

Every year there are two new car registrations, March and September. From Wednesday 1st March, brand-new car registrations will feature “23” as the age identifier. In September 2023 this will be updated to 73.
