1. Nissan Leaf – N-Connecta, five doors (£275pcm)
The Nissan Leaf wins the award for most unique-looking city car. Its x-shaped grille and range of colour choices aren’t just marketing ploys to get you to commit to a car based purely on looks alone.
Commanding the Leaf is a pleasant experience. It’s quiet and agile, despite being a family-sized hatchback. What’s more is that this N-Connecta trim comes with a 40kWh and electric motors which provide 148bhp, meaning you can go from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds. That’s quicker than the e-Golf!
More power isn’t all you get for your money either. Extras thrown in from the entry-level Acenta model include a “Heat Pack” which heats the front seats and steering wheel, as well as privacy glass, larger 17” alloys and part synthetic leather/part cloth upholstery. Finally, intelligent around view monitoring with front and rear parking sensors detects moving objects from all directions.
2. Suzuki Swift – 1.2 Dualjet SZ3, five doors (£177pcm)
Fantastic entry-level equipment is guaranteed with this mid-range Suzuki Swift SZ3 model. DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity for your smartphone and a leather steering wheel are among some of the key features.
It’s also distinctly a smart-looking car that won’t look out of place in the city or on the motorway – which the economic, yet sprightly 1.2-litre can handle.
As well as being accessible thanks to its five-door design, this Suzuki is surprisingly generous with headroom and legroom. Even four adults will be okay for longer journeys thanks to wider seats in the back.
Move round to the back and you’ll notice the Swift’s boot is just as impressive as far as space is concerned, with 265 litres of space one of the largest for a small hatch.
To top it all off, running costs are among some of the best in this class. This is mostly thanks to the 61.4mpg fuel economy and that it falls within insurance group 11.
Overall, if you want a cool-looking, nimble motor which is infectiously fun to drive, holds passengers and is cheap to run, this new Swift is available for £177 per month.
3. Seat Ibiza – 1.0 TSI 95 Xcellence [EZ], five doors (£188pcm)
It’s not often that you can get hold of a range-topping model of any car for sub-£200 per month. So it’s probably come as a surprise that the Seat Ibiza – a class-leader in the hatchback department – has come up trumps here.
It’s punchy as you go through the gears of the turbocharged engine and the suede seats make it feel that extra sporty. Combine this with enough interior space for five adults and a hefty 355-litre boot space, and you’re onto a winner with this Seat.
If this wasn’t enough to leave you convinced by the price, then the host of driver convenience features included as standard will probably do the trick. These are cruise control, reverse parking aid, keyless go, a satnav and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Safety is also paramount, with collision avoidance braking, traction control and tyre pressure monitoring included with the cost, too.
The Ibiza is one of the hottest hot hatches on the market and its punchy drive and great equipment could be yours for just £188 per month.
4. Ford Fiesta – 1.1 Zetec Navigation, five doors (£160pcm)
The Ford Fiesta is undoubtedly one of the most popular hatchbacks for UK drivers. It’s got great handling and features a setup which is minimalist by modern standards. No unnecessary dials or buttons – just premium materials and plastics which are soft to the touch, taking nothing away from the driver’s experience.
Included with this Zetec Navigation model is an 8” touchscreen display which lets you channel DAB radio or the music on your phone to seven speakers in the car with great bass. Ford’s most advanced SYNC 3 comes as standard, allowing you to control your phone and other media through voice commands.
This Ford comes ready with a stop/start system which cuts the engine whenever you stop. With a return of 55mpg and landing in insurance group 5, day-to-day running costs of the car are kept to a minimum.
Does this driver favourite sound like it’s up your street? Then you can get behind the wheel of it for £160 per month.
5. Skoda Fabia – 1.0 MPI SE, five doors (£181pcm)
Smooth yet full of life, the Skoda Fabia combines eager performance with affordable running costs. AKA the complete hatchback package!
Nothing is out of place in the Fabia, a lot like all the other models Skoda make. Large, clear dials marry well with an intuitive touchscreen display to let you concentrate on the road ahead. Easy.
Everything in this SE builds on the great work already done in the standard S trim. Air-con, alloy wheels, rear parking sensors and a plusher leather steering wheel with accompanying gear shift knob are just some of the standout features you get with this model.
The Fabia can be summarised as solidity and practicality rolled into one. Euro NCAP gave the car a five-star safety rating for front and rear passengers – a nod to the quality build materials on display by the Czech manufacturer. On top of this you’ve got active technology such as collision avoidance braking which intervenes automatically if a collision is detected.
The 330-litre boot comes ready with handy hooks and storage nets for loose items and bags from your weekly shop. Winner!
Great all-round visibility, stylish finishes inside and a spacious cabin and boot are available to you with this Fabia SE, for £181 per month.
6. Seat Arona – 1.0 TSI SE Technology [EZ], five doors (£187pcm)
In this SE Technology trim you get more than just interior space and good looks though. Bigger 17” alloys and a comfort suspension are well adapted to handling bumpy UK roads, while a rear parking sensor comes in handy when an unavoidable reverse-parallel park needs to be done.
Other uplifting features included with this Seat are interior ambient lighting, a chrome pack which adds splashes of shiny finish to the surfaces inside and smartphone integration compatible with Apple, Android and MirrorLink devices. On top of this you’ll get a full sat nav infotainment system which has 3D maps and can be controlled through your voice.
For £187 per month, you get a lot of car for your money!
7. Fiat 500 – 1.2 Lounge, three doors (£154pcm)
The well-equipped Lounge model Fiat 500 provides more of a ‘pop’ than the entry-level version suggests. Steel wheels and electrically adjustable door mirrors have been ditched for an exterior kitted out in chrome, larger alloys and a defrosting function on the door mirrors.
For a car which is just 3.6 metres long, what’s great about this nimble city car is that it can seat four adults comfortably and still have enough space in the boot for 185-litres of luggage. Not bad at all!
£154 per month will also get you more driver comforts and tech not available on the base trim. Cruise control, rear parking sensors, a techno leather steering wheel with integrated controls and a 7” touchscreen with DAB radio and smartphone connectivity are all included in this Fiat.

The Volkswagen Polo is the epitome of a British hatchback favourite. Fun to drive, generous interior space and quality materials across the dash, door sills and seats.
This mid-range TSI 95 SE model benefits from the best turbocharged version of the brand’s engine and doesn’t need to be worked as hard when accelerating through the gears. It’s pretty savvy too, with a combined fuel economy of 61.4mpg and low CO2 emissions of 105g/km.
Besides a solid unit, this version of the Polo has the brand’s plush 8” colour touchscreen display that houses DAB radio and the ability to connect your phone to the interface. A leather steering wheel is included too, which features media functions for quick and safe navigation through the menus.
Storage is also a positive for this Volkswagen, with 350 litres of boot space almost as competitive as some smaller SUVs on the market, such as the Nissan Juke. This sporty, well-equipped variation of an iconic family car can be yours for just £228 per month.
9. Skoda Octavia – 1.5 TSI SE Technology, five doors (£200pcm)

Just to give you an idea of kit this SE Technology model comes with, you’ll have front and rear parking sensors, front assist (warns the driver on an impending collision at speeds between 3mph and 130mph) and adaptive cruise control. For your media, the Skoda’s range-topping 8” Amundsen touchscreen sat nav system is standard with integrated Wi-Fi. As the slogan goes, “simply clever”!
The second Skoda to be included in our list, but with slightly more family-friendly dimensions and performance, all for £200 per month.
