So, be sure to watch this space if you want an iconic hatch for your business while saving on benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax and fuel costs.

3. Nissan Leaf e+

Price: £36,395 or from £276.39pcm on a lease

Safety: Five-star Euro NCAP rating

Top business features: Intelligent cruise control, traffic jam pilot (automatic lane assist), automatic climate control, intelligent auto headlights, heated front and rear seats

Electric cars have some of the cheapest running costs of any vehicle on the market. Their zero emissions also mean that they fall in the lowest BIK tax band – 0% for this year, rising to just 1% and 2% in the next two years.

The Nissan Leaf is still the world’s number one selling EV (electric vehicle) too and has been upgraded over the years to become a market leader. This top-spec e+ model has an impressive real range of 200 miles per charge and can add 140 miles of range in 35 minutes when you use a rapid charger. So, it’s very unlikely that you’re going to run out of charge on those long business trips.

4. Skoda Fabia

Skoda Fabia

Price: £13,440 or from £132.17pcm on a lease

Safety: Five-star Euro NCAP rating

Top business features: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensors, front assistant collision mitigation, service interval indicator, stop/start system

There aren’t many cars out there that are better value for money than the Skoda Fabia. Granted, it isn’t a star in the supermini category, but it’s proven time again that it should be considered one of the most reliable and affordable models of the whole bunch.

The Czech manufacturer is renowned for producing well-built vehicles thanks mostly in part to its ownership by Volkswagen. It also helps that Skoda has one of the most up-to-date car factories out of all the manufacturers VW owns, including Audi.

Estate models of the Fabia are available too if you want extra versatility for your company too, adding 200 litres of boot space and the option for a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

5. Volkswagen Passat TDI SE Nav

Price: £31,730 or from £263.49pcm on a lease

Safety: Five-star Euro NCAP rating

Top business features: Three-year ‘Car-Net’ subscription (live traffic information, e-call, vehicle status updates and remote control infotainment system through your smartphone), adaptive cruise control, stop/start function, traffic jam assist

The Volkswagen Passat provides a lot of bang for your buck, despite finding itself in the mostly premium executive car category. However, the Passat holds its own and keeps a very affordable asking price too.

We’ve chosen the SE Nav trim in particular over the entry-level SE because it has a range of technologies which will benefit business drivers. This includes the addition of a satnav with accompanying 8” colour touchscreen display. While you’re travelling between meetings, this system is voice activated, helping you safely keep control of the car without missing any work.

6. Hyundai Ioniq PHEV

Price: £23,840 or from £250.79pcm on a lease

Safety: Five-star Euro NCAP rating

Top business features: Heated driver and front passenger seats, automatic headlights with dusk sensor, high beam assist, parking system (rear camera and guidance indication), keyless engine with stop/start function

Hyundai’s Ioniq PHEV is the best-in-class when it comes to practicality and passenger comfort. It has a 443-litre boot which can be easily increased thanks to 60/40-split folding rear seats to gain a flat load bay. In the back there are two large reclining seats which are ideal for carrying business partners and colleagues in total refinement.

A large 8.9kWh battery forms part of the car’s hybrid drivetrain, capable of delivering around 22 miles of all-electric range. This is perfect for short-distance travelling in urban areas in order to save on company fuel costs. However, be sure that you charge it up when it runs out or else you’re likely to see increased fuel consumption figures.

7. Ford Fiesta EcoBoost 95 ST-Line Edition

Fiesta

Price: £20,240 or from £133.24pcm on a lease

Safety: Five-star Euro NCAP rating

Top business features: Reverse parking aid, 8” infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Ford ‘Easy-Fuel’, rain sensing wipers, quick clear heated windscreen, steering wheel mounted controls

The Ford Fiesta is an icon for British drivers and an award-winning small car. It’s renowned for being fun to drive, cheap to run and surprisingly spacious too.

ST-Line Edition trims of the Fiesta are a perfect fleet car, mostly thanks to its sportier body and accompanying cushioned sport seats up front. The setup makes long-distance driving comfortable, especially when you opt for the 1.5-litre diesel engine – the six-speed gearbox suits the quiet cruising class of this motor.

There are some little perks on the Fiesta too which will make spending many business miles in it enjoyable. This includes the brand’s ‘Easy-Fuel’ technology, which won’t accept the nozzle of the wrong fuel pump and ditches the dirty cap you’d usually have to screw off when filling up. On top of this, the ST-Line Edition throws in a Euro NCAP pack which contains the latest advanced safety features. This includes lane-keeping alert and aid, speed limiter, rear seatbelt reminder, rear centre headrest and automatic headlights.

8. MG ZS EV Exclusive

1024px-2018_MG_ZS_Exclusive_1.5_Front

Price: £27,995 or from £244.50 on a lease

Safety: Five-star Euro NCAP rating

Top business features: Adaptive cruise control, keyless entry with push button start, 12V power socket, ‘MG Pilot’ advanced driver assistance system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

The MG ZS EV is officially the cheapest family-size SUV in the electric car market. By nature it has large dimensions which make sitting five people inside comfortable, and the 470-litre boot is bigger than the one in the pricier Kia E-Niro.

Official WLTP range tests for the ZS EV show that it has a 163-mile range on a full charge. Unfortunately it isn’t capable of fast or rapid charging, so you may want to consider your different options for charging, especially if you can have one installed at your work premises for an accessible plug-in point.

Exclusive versions of the MG ZS come packed with much more convenience equipment which will make those business miles bliss. This includes leather-style heated front seats and a panoramic sky roof which allows floods of light to enter the cabin, making it airier.

9. Land Rover Discovery

Four-wheel drive

Price: £46,110 or from £414.53pcm on a lease

Safety: Five-star Euro NCAP rating

Top business features: Power tailgate, stop/start system, driver condition monitor, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, gradient acceleration control

While the Discovery is far from being an affordable vehicle to purchase or run, the level of versatility and comfort it has on the road makes it a great business car.

Entry-level S trims of the Discovery are more than capable of doing the job. An electronic air suspension coupled with agile handling gives the impression that you’re handling a much smaller vehicle, yet a retractable third row of two extra seats allows you to fit seven in total. Alternatively, you can increase the boot space to make a whopping 1,137 litres of room in the back.

Land Rover’s improvements in the Discovery’s fuel efficiency is remarkable thanks to the car shedding 450kg from the previous model. Opt for one of the 2.0-litre diesel engines for the best figures (32.4mpg) and to reduce spend at the pumps.

10. Mercedes A-Class

Mercedes A Class

Price: £22,745 or from £207.59 on a lease

Safety: Five-star Euro NCAP rating

Top business features: Cruise control, active lane change assist, 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, active blindspot assist, active speed limit assist

Professional and affordable, Mercedes’ entry-level A-Class is a great way to benefit from the brand’s premium engineering for the lowest price.

The A-Class has done some growing up over the years and now comes with a bigger boot, plus a versatile setup in the rear thanks to individually-folding seats.

If you’re looking to cut down on running costs, the cheapest model is the A180d. It has a frugal 1.5-litre diesel engine which has a real world fuel consumption of 64mpg. Couple this with sub-100 CO2 emissions and you have yourself a vehicle which won’t be a huge expense for your business.
